Kathmandu
Lhasa Overland Tour
Travelers who would like to make an overland journey
to Lhasa and afterward would like to make indepenent
activities can take the following tours which we have
given in this section.
According to the recent traveling rule declared by
the Chinese government, individual travelers (regardless
of the group size) can travel to Tibet via Nepal without
any problem; however there are some bureaucratic formalities
that must be followed.
1. You MUST be accompanied by a tour guide while
traveling in Tibet. He/she will help you dealing with
the Chinese authorities at checkpoints en route
2. Tour itinerary and the places to visit in Tibet
MUST be finalized in advance and stated clearly. While
applying for a travel permit, a copy of this should
be attached, they will issue the permit accordingly.
According to the places mentioned in the itinerary,
we must obtain a travel permit from the Tibet Tourism
Bureau (Lhasa). Our company will do this on your behalf.
3. Since there is no public transportation available
from Zhang-Mu to Lhasa, we MUST rent a Land Cruiser
/ Jeep / Bus depending on the group size. The cost
will be shared amongst the group member. So, the more
people there are the cheaper the price.
4. You are NOT allowed to travel in Tibet with an
individual Chinese visa via Nepal (from mainland China
it is possible), so you must obtain the Tibet visa
which will only be issued by the Chinese Embassy in
Kathmandu. After Tibet, if you would like to head
out to mainland China, this visa will allow you TO
ENTER but once you are in mainland China this visa
will be replaced with an individual
Chinese visa.
The normal process takes 5 working days to get the
visa from the Chinese Embassy and it costs US $ 26.
However, if time is limited we can obtain the visa
quicker by paying an express charge which is US $
17 more.
The visa section of the Chinese Embassy is only opened
on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 09:30 am till
11:30 am.
